Wildcats Drop Game Against North Dakota

12/10/2022 3:51:00 PM | Women's Basketball

GRAND FORKS, North Dakota – The Weber State Wildcat women's basketball team fell 76-54 on Saturday afternoon against old Big Sky Conference rival North Dakota.

Buckets were tough to come by in the first quarter as the Fighting Hawks were playing excellent defense, but Weber State's stars still found their way to the hoop. Daryn Hickok and Jadyn Matthews each were able to get on the board but North Dakota carried a 17-6 lead out of the first.

Weber State added a pair of three-point shots from Emri Lovell and Nakilah Johnson to go along with four free throws from Hickok, the Wildcats' all-conference performer, but the scoreboard read 38-19 at the half in favor of North Dakota.

WSU came out on fire in the third period. Hickok got a quick layup to add to her total, and Laura Taylor followed up with back-to-back three pointers to cut into the UND lead and force the Fighting Hawks to call timeout as Weber State scored eight of the first ten points in the half. North Dakota scored a pair of buckets to extend its lead, but Matthews answered with back-to-back layups to keep the Wildcats within striking distance. North Dakota started to pull away towards the end of the quarter, however, and had a 60-37 advantage heading into the final frame.

The Wildcats put up 17 points in the fourth and outscored North Dakota, but it wouldn't be enough to turn the tide of the game. The Wildcats wrap up their two-game road trip by falling 76-54 to North Dakota in Grand Forks.

NOTABLES

-Matthews was the lone member of Saturday's double-double club with 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Wildcats.
-Hickok once against led WSU in scoring with 16 points on 5-10 shooting.
-Weber State out-rebounded North Dakota 41-36.
-The 'Cats shot 15-17 from the free throw line.

QUOTABLES

"We didn't defend like we should have. We can make excuses about travel and impediments to get here, but that has nothing to do with our ability to defend. We have to sit down and guard. Plain and simple. We haven't lost two in a row since the start of the season. We aren't proud of our play tonight. We are pretty adamant that we have to become more consistent as a team. These players know that they aren't defined by a loss or a win. It's about how you lose (and) how you win. It's about how you play, how you work, and how you compete." – Velaida Harris
