STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Weber State Wildcat women's basketball team fought to the end against the Tarleton State Texas on Tuesday evening, but ultimately fell by a score of 86-69.
The Texans got out to a hot start in the first quarter with an 18-9 lead, but an Aaliyah Ellis jumper followed by a pair of Daryn Hickok free throws cut the deficit to just five points prior to the end of the quarter.
Weber State cut the deficit to three points at the start of the second quarter, but that's when the Texans caught fire. Tarleton State outscored Weber State 25-11 in the second quarter to create the separation that it needed to solidify its position in the game.
The Wildcat offense was much improved in the second half, sparked by one of the best offensive performances of Hickok's career. The Wildcats scored 20 points in the third, highlighted by six points from Hickok, and outscored the Texans by half a dozen points, as well.
Hickok continued her impressive offensive play with another 12 of her 28 points in the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats couldn't catch up to the Texans despite scoring 25 points as a team in the final frame. Tarleton State wrapped up the night with an 86-69 victory. Weber State falls to 4-5 on the season.
NOTABLES
-Hickok scored a season-high 28 points.
-The Wildcats shot 26-32 from the free throw line.
-Weber State out-rebounded Tarleton State 35-29.
-The WSU offense was humming and scored 45 points in the second half
QUOTABLES
"If we played in the first half like we did in the second, (it would be) a different story. We won the second half 45-43. [...] We turned the ball over repeatedly in the first half and that was the difference. We can't be tentative when we see pressure. We have to be patient, strong with the ball, and play deliberate under duress. [...] We have to understand that production means more than points. We have a quick turnaround and have to learn from this one. North Dakota is waiting." - Velaida Harris.
