Jay Hill leaves after nine seasons as head coach at Weber State

Hill transformed the Wildcat program and leaves as the all-time winningest coach with eight-straight winning seasons, six FCS Playoff appearances, four 10-win seasons and four Big Sky Championships.
Weber State football head coach Jay Hill has announced his departure after nine seasons leading the Wildcats. Hill has accepted the job as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator at BYU.Â
In nine seasons in Ogden, Hill transformed the Weber State program and leaves as the school's all-time leader in coaching wins. He led the Wildcats to eight-straight winning seasons, six FCS Playoff appearances, four 10-win seasons, and four Big Sky Conference Championships. Of the six 10-win seasons in school history, Hill has four, all coming since 2017. Â
He finished his Wildcat career with a 68-39 overall record and a 50-19 record in Big Sky Conference play. The 'Cats have been nationally ranked every year since 2016 and were ranked as high as second in the nation, the highest in school history.Â
In 2022, he coached his 100th career game and has now coached more games than any coach in WSU history. In 2021, Hill became the Weber State all-time leader in career coaching victories.Â
His .636 winning percentage is the second-highest winning percentage in Weber State history. He also has a record of 50-19 (.725) in Big Sky Conference games, the best percentage in school history.Â
Hill also coached 16 players to All-America honors 26 times at Weber State. The Wildcats have also earned 91 Big Sky All-Conference honors and multiple Academic All-Big Sky honors under Hill's leadership.Â
During the 2022 season, Weber State posted a 10-3 record and advanced to the second round of the FCS Playoffs. The season was highlighted by Weber State's first FBS win in 29 years as the Wildcats beat Utah State 35-7 in Logan.
Hill lead the Wildcats to four-straight Big Sky Championships (2017-20) and FCS Playoff appearances in five of the last six seasons.Â

"What our football program has accomplished in Coach Hill's tenure is unprecedented," said Weber State Director of Athletics Tim Crompton. "We are sad to see Jay leave, however, we wish him and his wonderful family nothing but the best in his new position.Â
We will begin a national search immediately, and Mickey Mental will assume the head coaching duties in an interim role."
