Weber State wins double overtime thriller 42-34 at Cal Poly

The Wildcats improved to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in Big Sky play with the win. Weber State finished with 371 yards of total offense, while Cal Poly totaled 455 yards.
It's the eighth straight win for Weber State over Cal Poly and the fifth straight win in San Luis Obispo.
The Mustangs opened the scoring with a 37-yard field goal with 10:06 remaining in the first quarter. Weber State answered with a 92-yard touchdown drive, capped by Nate Dahle's 39-yard touchdown pass to Tate Kjar with 3:11 left in the quarter to give the Wildcats a 7-3 lead.
David Dellenbach connected on a 30-yard field goal early in the second quarter to extend the lead to 10-3. Cal Poly scored on an 11-yard touchdown pass with 5:33 remaining, but missed the extra point, leaving Weber State ahead 10-9. The Wildcats responded with an 11-play, 75-yard drive, with Seth Rigtrup scoring on a 13-yard run with 57 seconds left in the half. Cal Poly missed a 43-yard field goal on the final play of the half, and Weber State took a 17-9 lead into the break.
Cal Poly tied the game at 17-17 on a 2-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion early in the third quarter, then took its first lead since the opening quarter on a 22-yard field goal to make it 20-17. Weber State answered with a 12-play, 75-yard drive that took more than six minutes off the clock. Spencer Ferguson finished the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to put the Wildcats back in front 24-20 with 1:10 remaining in the third.
The Mustangs regained the lead at 27-24 on a 15-yard touchdown pass with 8:53 left in regulation. After forcing a Cal Poly punt with just over two minutes remaining, Weber State drove 60 yards in eight plays and Dellenbach made a 38-yard field goal with 55 seconds left to tie the game at 27-27 and force overtime.
Cal Poly had the ball first in overtime and scored on a 3-yard touchdown run to take a 34-27 lead. On Weber State's possession, Dahle needed just two plays to answer. After an incomplete pass, he ran 25 yards for a touchdown, and Dellenbach's extra point tied the game at 34-34.
Weber State opened the second overtime with the ball and reached the Cal Poly 9-yard line. On third-and-9, Dahle connected with Tate Kjar for a 9-yard touchdown. Dahle then found Noah Kjar for the two-point conversion to give Weber State a 42-34 lead.
The Wildcat defense finished it from there. On Cal Poly's possession, Porter Small recorded a 10-yard sack on third down to push the Mustangs back to the Weber State 34. Cal Poly's fourth-down pass fell incomplete with Jayden Mayberry in coverage, sealing the eight-point win.
Dahle finished 15 of 33 passing for 223 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for a team-high 85 yards and a touchdown. Tate Kjar had five catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns, while Noah Kjar added five catches for 79 yards and caught the decisive two-point conversion. Rigtrup rushed for 49 yards and a touchdown. Dellenbach was 2 for 2 on field goals and 4 for 4 on extra points.
Defensively, Small had five tackles, four tackles for loss, and three sacks. Mayberry had six tackles and a 53-yard interception return, while Raimoana Tinirauarii led Weber State with eight tackles. The Wildcats recorded four sacks and forced one turnover.
The game marks the halfway point of the regular season. Weber State will close the second half with four of the final six games on the road. WSU will host Idaho next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Stewart Stadium.
