Former Wildcat men's basketball head coach will receive the Coach of Merit honor on April 6.

Former Weber State men's basketball head coach Joe Cravens is being honored by the Utah Sports Hall of Fame.

Coach Cravens will receive a Coach of Merit honor and will be recognized at the 2022 Spring Honor and Awards Banquet on Wednesday, April 6 at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City.

Cravens spent nine seasons coaching at Weber State, including seven seasons as the head coach from 1999-2006. He was an assistant coach for two years for Ron Abegglen and was part of the Wildcat team that won the Big Sky title and defeated North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament in 1999, led by Harold Arceneaux and Eddie Gill.

He became the head coach of the Wildcats in the 1999-2000 season. During his seven seasons as head coach, he compiled a 116-88 record and was 58-44 in Big Sky play. The highlight season came during the 2002-03 season when the Wildcats went undefeated in Big Sky play with a perfect 14-0 record, one of only two teams in Big Sky history to ever go undefeated in conference play. The Wildcats won 17-straight games that season, including winning the Big Sky Tournament in Ogden to advance to the NCAA Tournament. The 'Cats finished 26-6 that season, led by Big Sky MVP Jermaine Boyette.

Cravens coached two Big Sky MVP's in Arceneaux and Boyette and had players earn All-Big Sky honors 13 times.

Cravens has been involved with Weber State basketball as a TV analyst over the last several years. He has broadcast multiple Wildcat games on TV as well as on ESPN+, in addition to TV work for the last seven Big Sky Conference Championships.

He has also helped coach in the Weber State Men's Basketball Alumni Classics.

Prior to his time at Weber State, Cravens spent four seasons under Rick Majerus at the University of Utah, including serving as interim head coach during the 1989-90 season. He was also the head coach at the University of Idaho from 1993-96.

After Weber State, he was the head girls basketball coach at St. Joseph's High School in Ogden and led the team to a state championship.
