Wildcats Drop Heartbreaker to Rebels in the Desert
9/1/2022 10:06:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The Weber State Wildcats took to Cox Pavilion on Thursday night to open the UNLV Rebel Classic against the tournament's hosts and stayed extremely competitive but ultimately ended up falling 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 25-27, 23-25).
The Wildcats got out to a big lead early on against the 2021 NIVC champion Rebels, and were able to keep that momentum throughout the first set. With typical tough serving and hot hitting from the pins, Weber State was able to take the first set from UNLV 25-17.
The eight-point loss seemed to awaken the Rebels from their first-set slumber, and they came out on fire in the second set. UNLV hit .257 for the set compared to .146 for Weber State, and the Rebels muscled their way to 25-20 second-set triumph.
Weber State had a strong answer to start the third frame. The 'Cats took the lead at 6-5 and held it throughout the majority of the set. The lead was extended to 13-7 and stretched out to 24-19 at one point of the set, but the Rebels wouldn't be denied on their homecourt. UNLV scored eight of the final nine points to steal the third set 27-25 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.
Despite having stayed within punching distance for basically the entire fourth set, Weber State was never able to deliver the fatal blow that it needed to. At one point UNLV saw its lead extend to 23-18, but WSU came clawing back into the match. A couple of Rebel errors paired with a kill from Saane Katoa and an ace from Emma Mangum, and the Wildcats had whittled the lead down to a single point. They kept the set close, but UNLV snuck away with a 25-23 victory.
With the loss, Weber State drops to 3-1 on the season.
