Wildcats Fall to Anteaters in Tournament Opener

IRVINE, California – Weber State volleyball was back in action on Thursday night as they opened up their tournament in Irvine and Fullerton with a 0-3 (18-25, 14-25, 26-28) loss to UC Irvine.
The Anteaters went wire-to-wire in the first set stretching their lead to as much as six points in the middle of the set. The Wildcats fought back to within three points at 21-18, but UC Irvine rattled off the set's final four points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
There was a lot more of the same in the second set. Weber State got down early and couldn't ever recover to get back in striking distance. UC Irvine ran aways with the set 25-14.
After the long intermission, Jeremiah Larsen tinkered with his lineups a little bit and the Wildcats came out with some fire. Freshmen Brielle Rueckert and Jayda Tupea came into the game, Makayla Sorensen switched from libero to outside hitter, and the offense started clicking. The 'Cats had leads of 18-14 and again at 23-19, but UC Irvine wouldn't be denied on its home floor. The Anteaters came from behind and won the match in a 28-26 deuce set.
Weber State falls to 4-3 on the season following Thursday's result.
NOTABLES
-Dani Richins led the Wildcats with 13 kills and had a .211 hitting percentage. A season-high 17 digs gave Richins her fifth double-double of the season and the 32nd double-double of her storied career.
-Kate Standifird led all players with 32 assists.
-Saane Katoa and Emma Mangum each had four block assists.

Weber State returns to the court at the Bren Events Center on Friday afternoon. The Wildcats will square off against the Gonzaga Bulldogs of the West Coast Conference at 2 PM MT. There will not be a broadcast of the match, but the live stats can be followed here.
