Wildcats Fight to the End, Fall at the Buzzer to Vikings

1/19/2023 10:43:00 PM | Women's Basketball

PORTLAND, Ore. – In a hard-fought contest to the very end, the Weber State Wildcats dropped a nail biter to the Portland State Vikings by a score of 65-64.

A four-point offensive effort from Ava Williams in the first quarter helped anchor the Wildcat offense. Weber State headed to the second period trailing PSU 10-15.
Williams got the 'Cats started in the second quarter with a bucket to cut the deficit to just three points. The Wildcats fought to keep things within single digits, but the Vikings carried a 13-point advantage into the locker rooms.

A historic moment happened in the third quarter. Jadyn Matthews, who was sitting at 998 points for her career, finished a bucket through contact with 3:54 left in the third quarter to make her the 23rd Wildcat in program history to reach the exclusive 1,000-Point Club. A buzzer-beating three pointer from Daryn Hickok gave her a trio of her game-leading 25 points and trimmed the Viking lead to just five points heading to the fourth quarter.

A quarter-opening 11-2 run got the Wildcats on the right track and gave them a six point lead with 4:46 remaining in the game. The Vikings fought back and a PSU three ball swung things in favor of the Vikings to give them a one-point edge with 2:35 to go. Matthews scored two of her 21 points on a layup with 2:03 remaining to give WSU the lead once again. With 10 seconds remaining and a one point lead at 63-62, Matthews stepped to the free throw line for Weber State where she made one and missed one to double the Wildcat lead. With just under two seconds remaining, Esmeralda Morales, the leading three point shooter in the Big Sky Conference, hurled up a three from the corner that fell to give PSU a one-point lead at 65-64, and that was the final tally for the evening.

Weber State (4-14, 0-6) fought hard to come back and regain the lead, but will look to get right the ship on Saturday against Sacramento State.
