SACRAMENTO, Calif. – In the closing game of their two-game west coast road swing, the Weber State Wildcats fell to the Big Sky Conference Sacramento State Hornets.
The Hornets, who boast two of the top scorers in the conference, flew out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter, but the Wildcats punched back with six straight points – highlighted by four points from Emri Lovell – to close out the first quarter.
The Wildcat offense was paced by 10 points from WSU's pair of stellar seniors in the second quarter. Daryn Hickok went for seven of her team-leading 20 points in the second period, and Jadyn Matthews scored an additional three points. Weber State trailed by a score of 34-20 when the teams broke for the locker rooms.
A Matthews three pointer in the third quarter cut the Hornet lead to ten points, the gap was cut to ten on a separate occasion by a pair of Hickok free throws, but that was as close as the Wildcats would get to the top-of-the-table Hornets for the rest of the way.
Sacramento State flew away in the fourth quarter and went on to extend their dominance in the Big Sky with a 70-44 victory over Weber State (4-15, 0-7) on Saturday.
NOTABLES
-Hickok led the Wildcats with 20 points, three Wildcats (Hickok, Matthews, Vicky Parra) had four rebounds each.
-Aaliyah Ellis made her first career start in Saturday's game.
-The Wildcats shot 40% from three point range, including two three pointers from Matthews and another pair from Laura Taylor.
