Wildcats Defeat #1 Sacramento State in Dominating Five-Set Fashion

‘Cats advance to Big Sky Championship
Greeley, CO – The Weber State volleyball team went up against the Sacramento State Hornets this Thursday evening in the semifinals of the Big Sky Championship. Fighting with resilience, the 'Cats made an incredible comeback to secure themselves a spot in the Championship tomorrow night with a 3-2, (25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 25-23, 15-7) match victory.
With a good start to the match, the Wildcats and Hornets were see-sawing back and forth for the early portions of the first set. It was tied 18-18 when the Wildcats went on an extended 4-1 run to establish control and end the set with a 1-0 advantage over the Hornets 25-21.
Holding on to the lead for the majority of the second set, the Hornets found their footing. The Wildcats went ahead for the first time during the set at 19-18. Unable to establish a further lead, the Hornets battled to earn a 25-23 set victory. The third set saw much of the same, as the Hornets pulled away with a 5-2 early set lead. After a 6-1 run made by Sacramento State, they were given the separation needed to take the 2-1 advantage, 25-22.
Set four proved to be the most intense, with Weber State trailing behind Sacramento State for the majority of it. The 'Cats found their first lead of the set as they went up one point 23-22 on the Hornets. From there, a strong defense and a kill made by Saane Katoa closed out the set 25-23 and tied the match 2-2.
Weber State came out and dominated in set five, the 'Cats pulled out to 11-5 to create the separation they needed. The Wildcats cruised to a 15-7 victory and were awarded a spot in the Big Sky Championship match.
Weber State dominated in service aces, 17-2. Dani Richins led all players with 14 kills and 4 aces. Saane Katoa registered 12 kills and Liana Woodley added nine kills and three blocks.
Up Next: The Wildcats will take on the winner of this evening's match between the Montana State Bobcats and the Eastern Washington Eagles tomorrow, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Big Sky Championship.
