Lauren Hoe and Caleb Whitney named Big Sky Scholar Athletes

Two great senior standout athletes on the field of competition have also been recognized for their success in the classroom.Â
Weber State softball senior Lauren Hoe and men's track and field senior Caleb Whitney have been honored as the Weber State University recipients of the Big Sky Conference Scholar-Athlete Award for the 2022-23 academic year.Â
One senior female and one senior male athlete from each Big Sky school are selected each year as the Big Sky Conference Scholar-Athletes and are recognized for their outstanding athletic and academic achievements.Â
Hoe finished her standout career with the Wildcat softball team in 2023 as one of the best to ever play at Weber State. She was a four-time All-Big Sky selection and was named the Big Sky Player of the Year in 2021.Â
She was a part of three Big Sky regular season championship teams and two teams that advanced to the NCAA Championships, including the 2019 team that became the first team in Big Sky history to win a tournament game.Â
She played in 193 career games at Weber State and ranks in the WSU career top 10 in 11 different statistical categories. She ranks second in school history with 34 career home runs and is third in walks and slugging percentage. Â
Hoe, a native of Walla Walla, Washington, graduated from Weber State with dual bachelor's degrees in Exercise and Sport Science and Rehabilitation Sciences. She earned Big Sky Academic All-Conference honors all five years of her career with the Wildcats. Â
Caleb Whitney, a native of St. George, Utah, finished his standout Wildcat career as a four-time Big Sky Champion. He won the conference title in the decathlon in 2021 and 2022 and won the conference crown in the heptathlon in 2022 and 2023.Â
He ranks in the WSU career top ten in six different events. He is second all-time in the heptathlon and ranks third in the decathlon.Â
He also qualified for the NCAA West Region Championships in the 110-meter hurdles as a senior in 2023.Â
Whitney also earned a double bachelor's degree from Weber State in Finance and Business Economics.Â
To be eligible for this award, the student-athlete must have exhausted his or her intercollegiate athletic eligibility and/or be a member of the graduating class, earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 (on a 4.0) scale, been a participant in a Big Sky-sponsored sport, completed at least two (2) years of intercollegiate competition at the institution, and been a letter winner.
