9/8/2023 6:20:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Weber State Wildcat volleyball extended its winning streak to three consecutive matches with a sweep over the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Islanders on Friday afternoon.
The opening set against the tournament hosts was a back and forth affair until the Wildcats pulled away towards the end. The see-saw set was tied as late as 19-19, but Weber State won seven of the set's final eight points – including an ace and a kill from Kate Standifird – to close out the first at 25-20.
Weber State's momentum carried over into the second. The 'Cats never trailed against the Islanders after opening the frame by scoring eight of the set's first ten points. Three kills and two service aces from Dani Richins paced a balanced Wildcat offense as WSU waltzed to a 25-15 second set.
It was the Islanders who got out to a quick start in the final set with a 7-5 lead in the match's final set, and that's when Mia Peterson took control. With a two-point deficit, the Pleasant Grove, Utah native and transfer from New Mexico State recorded a kill that rotated her to the service line and flipped the score to 7-6 in favor of the Islanders. Peterson stepped up to serve and scored back-to-back aces to give the 'Cats their first lead of the set at 8-7. A kill from Brielle Rueckert and an Islander attacking error extended the Wildcat lead to 10-7, and another Peterson ace capped off a six-point run that swung the tide in favor of Weber State.
One of Baylee Bodily's eight kills on the night gave Weber State a 20-13 advantage, but the Islanders clapped back. TAMUCC scored six of the next eight points to make it a three-point set and give the final frame some drama, but a resilient Weber State squad closed out the third with a 25-22 victory to earn its second-straight sweep and third-consecutive victory.
