Wildcats fall in double overtime heartbreaker at Sacramento State

SACRAMENTO - It was a shootout in Sacramento but a heart breaker for the Wildcats. Sacramento State beat Weber State 51-48 in double overtime in a wild, high-scoring game Saturday night at Hornet Stadium.

Weber State outscored the Hornets 17-0 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Both teams scored in the first overtime to tie it at 48-48. The Hornets scored a field goal in the second overtime, then Weber State's 27-yard field goal attempt missed to seal the win for Sacramento State.

The two teams combined for over 1,000 total yards of offense as Sacramento State put up 544 yards, compared to 527 for Weber State. WSU had 316 yards rushing and 211 yards passing.

Wildcat junior Damon Bankston ran for a career-high 234 rushing yards with one touchdown on 25 carries. The 234 yards is tied for the 10th most rushing yards ever by a Wildcat.

The Wildcats also had a 95-yard interception return touchdown by freshman Frankie Edwards, the second-longest return in school history.

Jacob Sharp finished with nine catches for a career-high 119 yards and three touchdowns.

The Hornets led 34-24 at halftime but Weber State only gave up seven points in the second half.

The two teams combined to score on each of the first seven and eight of the nine possessions of the game.

Sacramento State scored on its first possession, a 16-play, 79-yard drive to start the game 7-0.

Weber State answered on its first possession with a four-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a 28-yard touchdown run by freshman Davion Godley. With the extra point after the touchdown, Kyle Thompson became Weber State's all-time leading scorer.

The Hornets scored a touchdown on their next possession to take a 14-7 lead.

Thompson made a 20-yard field goal on WSU's next possession to make it 14-10.

Sacramento State scored on a 70-yard run to take a 21-10 lead with 10:13 to play in the second quarter.

Weber State answered with a 37-yard touchdown from Richie Muñoz to Sharp.

The Hornets made a 43-yard field goal on their next possession and led 24-17.

The Wildcats failed to score on their next possession and the Hornets responded with a 54-yard touchdown and led 31-17 with 1:41 left in the first half.

Weber State answered as Bankston scored on a 54-yard touchdown run to make it 31-24 with 1:20 to play.

The Hornets scored again and closed the first half with a 41-yard field goal and led 34-24 at the break.

In the third quarter, the Hornets picked off a WSU pass in the end zone, then forced a Wildcat fumble to setup a touchdown and led 41-24 with 6:30 to play in the quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter the Hornets were driving again but Edwards picked off a Sacramento State pass and returned it 95 yards for a touchdown. It is the second-longest interception return in Weber State history.

That made the score 41-31. The Wildcats stopped the Hornets on their next possession than Muñoz found Sharp again for a 24-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 41-38 with 10:28 to play.

On WSU's last possession, Thompson made a 21-yard field goal with four seconds left to force overtime.

Muñoz was 25 of 38 passing for 211 yards and three touchdowns. Godley added 13 carries for 79 yards and a touchdown.

Weber State sits at 3-5 overall and 2-2 in Big Sky play.

The 'Cats have a bye week next week and will return to action on November 2 at Northern Arizona. The next home game will be on November 9 against Idaho State at Stewart Stadium.
