Wildcat drop road game 27-6 at Northern Arizona

WSU couldn't overcome quick NAU start in Red Rock Rivalry.
FLAGSTAFF - Northern Arizona scored 21 points in the first 6:10 of the game and the Lumberjacks held on for a 27-6 win over Weber State Saturday afternoon at the Walkup Skydome as part of the Red Rock Rivalry.Â
Weber State got off to about as bad a start imaginable as NAU scored on a 75-yard drive on its first play of the game. Weber State threw an interception on its first play of the game, and the Lumberjacks scored on a 9-yard touchdown just five plays later to make it 14-0 just 2:40 into the first quarter.Â
On Weber State's next play from scrimmage, NAU picked off another pass at the 30-yard line and six plays later, added another touchdown and the Lumberjacks led 21-0 with 8:50 left in the first quarter.Â
The rest of the game was tied 6-6, but Weber State couldn't overcome the slow start.Â
Neither team scored until late in the second quarter when Kyle Thompson made a 39-yard field goal. NAU led 21-3 at halftime after the Lumberjacks missed a field goal at the end of the half.Â
The Wildcats opened the second half with a 13-play, 62-yard drive that took 6:40, capped by a 30-yard field goal by Thompson to make it 21-6.Â
The Lumberjacks scored for the first time since early in the game when they started the fourth quarter with a 20-yard touchdown to make it 27-6.Â
Northern Arizona finished with 361 yards of total offense, compared to 332 for Weber State.Â
The Wildcat defense was credited with three sacks and seven tackles for loss. Kemari Munier-Bailey and Brayden Wilson each had eight tackles and 1.5 tackles sacks.Â
The defense also had two blocked kicks as Jalon Rock blocked a field goal in the second quarter and Matt Herron blocked an extra point attempt in the fourth quarter.Â
On offense, the Wildcats ran for 180 yards with Damon Bankston leading the way with 96 yards on 16 carries. Bankston also moved up to seventh on the Weber State career rushing list, now with 2,242 yards.Â
Davion Godley added 69 yards rushing on 13 attempts.Â
Richie Muñoz finished the game 18 of 32 passing for 152 yards with the two interceptions. Noah Kjar led the receivers with 469 yards. Marcus Chretien had three catches for 38 yards, Jacob Sharp had four catches for 28 yards and Adrian Cormier had five receptions for 24 yards.

With the two field goals, Kyle Thompson is now tied with Trey Tuttle with 61 career field goals, the second-most in WSU history.Â
Weber State is now 3-6 overall and 2-3 in Big Sky play. After two straight road games, the Wildcats will return home to host longtime rival Idaho State next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Stewart Stadium.Â
