Weber State closes out season with 28-17 win over Cal Poly

Wildcats Kyle Thompson tied a school record with five field goals, the ‘Cats rushed for 265 yards and the WSU defense had six tackles for loss with three sacks in the win.

OGDEN - Weber State ended the 2024 football season on a high note as the Wildcats knocked off Cal Poly 28-17 Saturday afternoon at Stewart Stadium. 

Kyle Thompson tied a school record with five field goals, the 'Cats rushed for 265 yards and the WSU defense had six tackles for loss with three sacks in the win. 

Thompson made two field goals in the first quarter and another early in the second quarter to give the Wildcats a 9-0 lead. 

Cal Poly scored on an 80-yard touchdown early in the third quarter to make it 9-7. The Wildcats responded with another goal by Thompson to make it 12-7 with 8:38 left in the third quarter. 

The Mustangs took the lead on a 42-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter and led 14-12, and extended the lead early in the fourth quarter with a field goal to lead 17-12. 

But Weber State responded with 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Jacob Sharp had a 17-yard pass completion from Richie Muñoz, then Davion Godley scored on a 25-yard run to give the 'Cats a 25-17 lead. Thompson's fifth field goal with 2:38 gave the 'Cats the nine-point lead. 

Weber State totaled 456 yards of offense, compared to 220 for Cal Poly. The Wildcats had 265 yards rushing and 191 yards passing. WSU led the Mustangs 26-7 on first downs and held Cal Poly to 74 yards rushing. 

The 'Cats played without junior captain Damon Bankston who missed the game due to injuries, but three young Wildcat rushers answered the call. Adrian Cormier ran for a career-high 138 yards with 21 carries to lead the Wildcat rushing game. He became the third different player to rush for over 100 yards in a game this season. 

Freshman Davion Godley had 17 carries for 92 yards and a touchdown. He finished his freshman campaign with 630 yards and four touchdowns. 

Bird Butler added 57 rushing yards. 

Muñoz was 25 of 25 passing for 191 yards and a touchdown. Sharp had five catches for 55 yards and the touchdown and Marcus Chretien also had five catches for 32 yards. 

On defense, the 'Cats had six tackles for loss and three sacks with senior Kemari Munier-Bailey leading the way. Had had four total tackles with three tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He also had three quarterback hurries and one pass breakup. 

Brayden Wilson added 1.5 sacks with three total tackles. Mayson Hitchens had seven tackles and Garrett Beck had four tackles with one tackle for loss. 

Thompson was a perfect 5 of 5 on field goals, with makes of 30, 36, 26, 30, and 43 yards. The five field goals is tied for the most in a game in Weber State history. 

He also finished his Wildcat career with 67 career field goals, which ties Scott Shields (1995-98) for the most in a career in WSU history. He also finished his career as Weber State's all-time leader in points scored. 

Prior to the game, Weber State honored seven seniors playing in their last career game. Munier-Bailey, Sharp, Thompson, Beck, Zeke Birch, Steven Bryant, and Grant Sands are the seven seniors on this year's Wildcat team.  

Weber State finishes the season at 4-8 overall and 3-5 in Big Sky play.
