This was the fourth NIVC appearance for the Wildcats.
TUCSON, Ariz. - A tough Weber State volleyball squad took on the Pacific Tigers this Friday afternoon in the first round of the NIVC. Despite forcing a fifth set, the Wildcats dropped the match and ended their 2024 season.Â
The Pacific Tigers went 18-12, 8-10 in the WCC this season. This was the Tigers fourth straight berth into the NIVC making a run to the quarterfinals in the 2022 tournament. During the 2024 season, Pacific went 4-1 against NCAA Tournament teams with wins over Yale, College of Charleston, Sacramento State, and LMU.Â
SET 1 | Weber State and Pacific stayed close to start the match, tied at 6-6 early in the first set. Starting to pull away, the Tigers took a five-point lead at 13-8. That run was snapped by a Pacific attack error and the Wildcats slowly chipped at the deficit. A Weber State 3-0 run courtesy of two Liana Woodley kills and one Rose Moore service ace cut the Tigers lead to two. Pacific pulled ahead by a few points but not before another Wildcat run allowed the 'Cats to trail by one at 19-20. A block by Saane Munyer and Moore tied the set 22-22, but unfortunately the Wildcats couldn't keep their momentum rolling and Pacific took the opening set 25-23.
SET 2 | Weber State took an early 8-4 advantage to start the second set and maintained that lead until the very end 25-22 to even out the match. Weber State recorded 14 kills throughout the set for a .265 hitting percentage.Â
SET 3 | Pacific took control of the third, jumping to a 6-4 lead. The Wildcats put up a fight to trail the Tigers by one until a 3-0 run by Pacific forced Weber State to a timeout. However, an unstoppable Pacific squad continued their run to extend the lead 16-8. The Tigers' run was snapped by a Munyer kill and the 'Cats started to string together a few points. Coming back to trail by four it was not enough as Pacific held onto their momentum to seal the set 25-19.
SET 4 | Weber State held strong in the fourth, leading the set 10-5. Continuing to maintain control, the Wildcats did not allow the Tigers a single lead and dominated the set 25-12.
SET 5 | Looking to continue postseason play, the Wildcats and Tigers battled exchanging points back-and-forth. Pacific started to pull away at 12-9, until Wildcat Gneiting collected a kill advancing the 'Cats to 10. Two more Tiger points put the set at match point and a kill by Pacific then secured the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.
