Dillon Jones named top five finalist for Julius Erving Award

Jones is a finalist for the award given to the top small forward in the country. He currently leads the Big Sky in points, rebounds, and assists, the only player in the country to lead a conference in all three categories.

Weber State standout Dillon Jones has been named one of five finalists for the 2024 Julis Erving Award, given to the top small forward in the country. The award is presented by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. 

Jones joins Keion Brooks Jr. of Washington, David Jones of Memphis, Dalton Knecht of Tennessee, and Baylor Scheierman of Creighton as the five finalists for the award. 

The Julius Erving Award, named after the Class of 1993 Hall of Famer and 16-year professional basketball player, celebrates its 10th year by recognizing the top small forwards in Division I men's college basketball.

Fans can support their favorite player by participating in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, starting Friday, March 8, on hoophallawards.com. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process.

Later this month, the finalists will be presented to Erving and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The Selection Committee for the award is composed of top men's college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors, and Hall of Famers.

The winner of the 2024 Erving Award will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the other four members of the Men's and Women's Starting Five.

Jones is having one of the best seasons in Weber State and Big Sky Conference history and has led the Wildcats to 20 wins this season. He has been named Big Sky Player of the Week eight times this season and National Player of the Week once. 

After the regular season, Jones leads the Big Sky in points, rebounds, and assists, the only player in the country to lead a conference in all three categories. He is also one of two players in the nation averaging at least 20 points,10 rebounds, and 5 assists per game. 

Per Sports Reference, since the 1992-93 season, Jones is one of two players in the country to post at least 600 points, 300 rebounds, 150 assists, and 50 steals in a season. Ben Simmons at LSU in 2015-16 is the only other player to post those numbers since at least the 1992-93 season. 

He is averaging 20.8 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game. He is seventh in the nation with 18 double-doubles this season and currently ranks 16th in the country in rebounds and 19th in scoring. He is also seventh in the nation in minutes played. 

He has scored in double figures in all 30 games played this season and has scored 20 or more 17 times, including nine of the last 10 games of the regular season. He scored his career-high of 30 points three times. He also had nine assists in a game four times. 

In the February 29 win over Northern Colorado, Jones tied his career-high with 30 points, had a career-high 23 rebounds, and tied his career with nine assists. He's the first player to post 30, 23, and 9 in a game since at least the 2010-11 season. 

The Columbia, South Carolina native, is concluding one of the best careers in Weber State history. Following the end of the regular season, He has played in 118 career games at Weber State and started in 95 games. He currently ranks in the Weber State top 10 in 10 different statistical categories. 

He is Weber State's all-time leader in steals and ranks second in assists, second in free throws made, third in rebounding, and fifth in points. He also ranks fourth in Big Sky history in rebounds. 

He is the only active player in the country and the only player in Big Sky history with at least 1,500 points, 1,000 rebounds, 400 assists, and 200 steals. Since the 1992-93 season, he is one of only four players in the nation to post those numbers in a career.
