GREELEY, Colorado - The 2025 Weber State volleyball season ended with a reverse-sweep loss to the Idaho State Bengals, despite the Wildcats taking an early 2-0 lead in the match.
The Wildcats and Bengals went neck and neck to begin the first set in the semi-finals of the Big Sky Tournament. Pulling away, the Bengals used two 3-0 runs to go up 15-11. However, the Wildcat offense did not allow Idaho State to hold that advantage as a Kaylie Ray kill tied it up 16-16. Following a timeout by the Wildcats, a huge 6-0 run, using four Weber State kills, gave the 'Cats an advantage that the Bengals could not recover from as they secured the first set 25-20.
Idaho State took a 20-16 lead in the second set before Weber State made its comeback. Kills from Brielle Rueckert and Rose Moore, coupled with an Idaho State error, narrowed the deficit to a single point. The Wildcats utilized three more kills to tie the set at 23-23, preventing the Bengals from extending their lead past three points and forcing an Idaho State timeout. Following the break, Moore delivered two service aces, securing the set victory for Weber State at 25-23.
The Bengals used a burst of momentum in the third set, fueled by an 8-0 run that resulted in a decisive 25-12 win, pushing the match to a fourth set.
The Wildcats snapped the Bengals momentum in the fourth set, securing five consecutive points to take an 8-7 lead. From that point, the set became a back-and-forth contest, with the score tied five times as they approached the final points. A service error by the Bengals tied the score at 24-24. However, Idaho State immediately responded with two kills, winning the set 26-24 and forcing the match to a decisive fifth set.
Idaho State dominated the fifth set, quickly building a 7-3 lead and then extending it to a seven-point advantage after a Weber State timeout. Despite the Wildcats attempts to rally, the Bengals secured the 15-7 set victory, completing a reverse sweep to defeat the Wildcats and advance to the Big Sky Tournament championship match.
