Gavin Fowler named Weber State defensive coordinator

Fowler will also coach the Wildcat safeties.
OGDEN - New Weber State football head coach Eric Kjar has named Gavin Fowler the defensive coordinator for the Wildcats. He will also coach the WSU safeties.Â
Fowler, a native of Kaysville, Utah, comes to Weber State after spending the last seven years on the coaching staff at BYU.Â
In 2025, he was the assistant safeties coach at BYU under former WSU head coach Jay Hill.Â
Fowler was also a defensive analyst and safeties coach with the Cougars from 2022-24, and was a graduate assistant from 2019-21.Â
"We are extremely fortunate to have Gavin on our staff and as our defensive coordinator," Kjar said. "He brings strong playing and coaching experience, has a great understanding of defensive schemes, and has excellent ties in recruiting. He's a great fit for our program."Â
Fowler played defensive back at BYU from 2011-18. He earned his bachelor's degree in Communication from BYU in 2017 and earned his master's degree in Public Administration in 2020.Â
Fowler played at Davis High School in Kaysville, where he was the starting quarterback for three seasons. He led the Darts to the state championship game in 2009.Â
His wife is Abbey. His father, Blaine Fowler, played quarterback at BYU from 1981-85, and has been a longtime football and college basketball TV analyst.Â
