Gavin Fowler is in his first season as the defensive coordinator for the Wildcats. He also coaches the WSU safeties. Fowler was hired by new head coach Eric Kjar in January 2026. 

Fowler, a native of Kaysville, Utah, comes to Weber State after spending the last seven years on the coaching staff at BYU. 

In 2025, he was the assistant safeties coach at BYU under former WSU head coach Jay Hill. 

Fowler was also a defensive analyst and safeties coach with the Cougars from 2022-24, and was a graduate assistant from 2019-21. 

Fowler played defensive back at BYU from 2011-18. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Communication from BYU in 2017 and earned his master’s degree in Public Administration in 2020. 

Fowler played at Davis High School in Kaysville, where he was the starting quarterback for three seasons. He led the Darts to the state championship game in 2009. 

His wife is Abbey. His father, Blaine Fowler, played quarterback at BYU from 1981-85, and has been a longtime football and college basketball TV analyst.
