OGDEN - New Weber State head coach Eric Kjar has named Isaac Asiata as an assistant coach with the Wildcat staff.Â
Asiata, a former Utah and NFL player, will coach the Wildcat offensive line.Â
Asiata comes to Weber State after spending the last season as an assistant offensive line coach with the University of Utah, helping the Utes to an 11-win season. Utah finished the season second in the nation in rushing at 266.3 yards per game, and the Utah offensive line was ninth in the country in sacks allowed. Â
He is a former standout player at Utah and was an NFL Draft selection.Â
"Isaac will be a great addition to our program," Kjar said. "He was a phenomenal player and has gained valuable coaching experience on the staff at Utah. He really understands the offensive line scheme and technique and has ties to the state and the community, which will be great assets to our coaching staff."
Asiata was born in San Francisco and then moved to Utah, where he played high school football at Spanish Fork High School. He then had a standout career at Utah, where he was a four-year starter for the Utes from 2011-16. He was a two-time All-Pac-12 selection and won the Morris Trophy in 2016, given to the top lineman in the Pac-12. He also played in the Senior Bowl.Â
He graduated from Utah in 2016 with a degree in Sociology.Â
He was drafted in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins. He was a part of the Dolphins team for two seasons in 2017 and 2018 and one season with the Buffalo Bills.Â
"I'm really excited to be coaching at Weber State," Asiata said. "This is a historic program, and I look forward to getting Weber State back to where it needs to be."Â
Following his NFL career, Asiata became a police officer in Provo and Herriman. Â
He is the cousin of former Utah player and NFL running back Matt Asiata.Â
He and his wife Angel have three children.Â
