WSU's second half rally falls short to Vandals

OGDEN - Weber State rallied from a first half deficit, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats fell 75-67 to the Idaho Vandals Saturday night at the Dee Events Center. 

Idaho never trailed in the game and jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead five minutes into the game. The Vandals led by as many as 19 points at 27-8 with nine minutes left in the first half. 

Weber State started the game just 2 of 16 from the field and trailed 41-29 at halftime. The Wildcats shot 23 percent from the field in the first half, compared to 52 percent for the Vandals. 

The Wildcats came on strong in the second half and started the half on an 11-3 run and trailed by three points just three minutes into the half. The 'Cats cut the lead to two points with 7:33 and got as close as one point at 58-57 with 6:44 to play. 

The Vandals led 61-59 with 5:28 to play when they went on a 6-0 run and led by eight with three minutes to play. WSU was never closer than five points the rest of the way. 

For the game, the Vandals shot 45 percent and held Weber State to a season-low 30 percent shooting from the field. The Wildcats were just 5 of 21 from 3-point range and committed 17 turnovers. WSU did win the rebounding battle 44-37 and shot 28 of 39 from the free throw line. 

Tijan Saine Jr. led the Wildcats once again as he finished with 25 points and was 15 of 17 from the free throw line. He also had six assists and five steals. 

Viljami Vartiainen added 12 points with three 3-pointers. Malek Gomma had eight points with 12 rebounds, and Nigel Burris also had eight points. Edwin Suarez Jr. had seven points and seven rebounds.  

The Wildcats fall to 10-9 overall, and 4-2 in Big Sky play, now a third of the way through the conference regular season. 

Weber State hits the road at Montana and Montana State next week.
