Kevin McGiven begins his third season overseeing the Wildcat quarterbacks and his second season serving as the Offensive Coordinator.
Under McGiven’s watchful eye, WSU quarterback Cameron Higgins has spent the past two seasons maturing into the starting quarterback. In 2006 Higgins sat out the season as a red-shirt and in 2007, as a first-year player, Higgins completed 131-239 passes for 1,959 yards and 17 touchdowns. His Passing Efficiency Rating of 143.20 was the second best figure in the Big Sky. Higgins was named the 2007 Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year and earned Honorable Mention All-Big Sky Honors. The Wildcat offense took a big leap in 2007 averaging 392.8 yards per game and 27.2 points a contest.
His offense has not only improved in the passing game, but each of the past two seasons the Wildcats have produced the leading rusher in the Big Sky in running back Trevyn Smith
McGiven came to Weber State late in the Spring of 2006 taking over from Coach Ed Larson. McGiven had charge over veterans Ian Pizarro and Shawn Woods both of whom played extensively in 2006. Pizarro threw for 1,197 yards and seven touchdowns while Woods threw for 695 yards and five touchdowns. Pizarro was named Honorable Mention All-Big Sky.
McGiven grew up in Orem, Utah, and graduated from Mountain View High in 1995. He played one season at Eastern Arizona JC under Coach Paul Tidwell and later played wide receiver at Louisiana Tech for coach Gary Crowton.
He came back to Utah after playing at Louisiana Tech and finished his bachelor’s degree in business from Utah Valley State College in 2001.
In 2002, Crowton asked McGiven to join the BYU staff as a graduate assistant. The first two years he helped coach the wide receivers. In 2004 ,he oversaw the progress of the Cougar quarterbacks.
In the winter of 2004 he was hired to serve as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Southern Utah University under coach Wes Meier where he served on the same staff with current WSU assistant coach Kevin Clune. With McGiven overseeing the offense, the Thunderbirds posted a 34-31 over the WSU Wildcats in Ogden.
