Former Weber State running back Daniel Wright Jr. is back as an assistant coach with the Wildcats. Wright was hired in June 2025 and coaches the WSU running backs.

Wright played two seasons from 2019 to the spring 2021 season, and was a part of two Big Sky Championship teams and two trips to the FCS Playoffs. He transferred to WSU in December 2018 after playing two seasons at American River College.

In his first season at Weber State, Wright was a part of the 2019 Wildcat team that won the third-straight Big Sky title and advanced to the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs. He had 11 rushing attempts for 33 yards in the win over Idaho State that clinched the Big Sky regular season title.

In the spring 2021 season, Wright played in all six games as Weber State won its fourth straight Big Sky title with a 5-0 regular season record and advanced to the FCS Playoffs. He finished eighth in the Big Sky in rushing that season at 50.5 yards per game. He had 44 carries for 303 yards and three touchdowns in six games. He ran for 91 yards in the FCS Playoff game against Southern Illinois.

Wright graduated from Weber State in April 2021 and then transferred to Tarleton State, where he played one season in 2021. He appeared in seven games for the Texans and ran for 443 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 15 receptions for 172 yards and two more touchdowns.

He then began his coaching career at American River College in 2023, where he helped lead the team to a Northern California Conference Championship.

He spent the 2024 season coaching running backs at East Central University, a Division II school in Oklahoma. He coached multiple all-conference performers in his two seasons of coaching.

Wright is a native of Fairfield, California, and is a first-generation college student. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Communication with a minor in Psychology from Weber State in April 2021. He earned his master’s degree in Sports Administration from East Central State in 2024.
