Mickey Mental is in his third season as the head coach of the Weber State football program. Mental is also the offensive coordinator for the Wildcats.Â
After serving as the offensive coordinator for the 2022 season, Mental was named the 12th head coach in Weber State history on December 20, 2022.Â
In his two seasons as head coach of the Wildcats entering the 2025 season, he has led Weber State to 10 wins and coached seven players to All-America honors and 17 to All-Big Sky Conference honors, including five to first-team honors.Â
During his first season in 2023, Mental led Weber State to a 6-5 overall finish, WSU’s ninth-straight winning season. Weber State closed the season with three straight wins, including a win over No. 4 ranked Idaho.
In 2024, the ‘Cats won four games and had two All-Americans and six players named to the All-Big Sky team. Â
Mental was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under Jay Hill at Weber State during the 2022 season where WSU won 10 games, including an FBS win at Utah State. The Wildcats advanced to the second round of the FCS Playoffs and were nationally ranked all season. The Wildcat offense ranked in the top 25 in the nation in scoring offense, rushing offense, first downs, and third down conversion percentage, and had seven players earn All-Big Sky Conference honors.Â
WSU is not his first head coaching job as Mental was also the head coach at Division II Notre Dame College in Ohio where he posted a 16-2 record in two seasons as head coach. He spent 13 total years at Notre Dame, including five years as the offensive coordinator.Â
In his two seasons as head coach, Mental posted a 16-2 record. The Falcons were 5-0 and won the MEC Championship during the shortened spring 2021 season. In the fall 2021 season, Mental led the team to an 11-2 overall record and a trip to the second round of the Division II playoffs.  Â
In the five games in the spring 2021 season, Mental led the team to a perfect 5-0 record and the offense ranked high in the nation in several categories. The Falcons were second in the country in rushing yards per game, third in points per game, fifth in total offense and seventh in first downs.Â
He was named MEC Coach of the Year and had a program-record 22 players earn all-conference honors, including the offensive player of the year.Â
During the 2021 season, the Falcons finished the season ranked ninth in the country. The offense averaged 40.6 points per game, sixth-best in the nation, and was seventh in red zone scoring, 13th in first downs and 18th in total offense.Â
In his five seasons as the offensive coordinator, the Falcons had their five best seasons in total rushing, with the team setting a new school record in each of his first four seasons. In 2017, NDC ran for 2,558 yards to lead the Mountain East Conference with over 230 yards per game while in 2018 and 2019, the team ranked in the top 10 in all of Division II.Â
Prior to joining Notre Dame College, Mental spent one year as the quarterback coach at Brookside High School.
A native of Olmstead Falls, Ohio, Mental played college football at Baldwin-Wallace, where he was a three-year starter at quarterback for the Yellow Jackets. He earned OAC player of the week honors and when his Baldwin-Wallace career was over, he earned a tryout with the Cleveland Browns.
He is married to his wife Jessica. They had their first child in June 2025.Â
