The 2016 season was the third year for Lance Hunsaker as an assistant coach at Weber State. For the past two seasons, Hunsaker coached the Wildcat linebackers.
In 2016, Hunsaker helped lead Weber State to a 7-5 record, a third-place finish in the Big Sky Conference and WSU’s first trip to the FCS Playoffs in seven years. Weber State led the conference in passing defense in 2016.
Hunsaker has coached four players to All-Big Sky honors. In 2016, Tre’von Johnson earned first team honors and Landon Stice being named to the honorable mention team.
The Wildcats led the Big Sky in total defense in 2015 and finished the season 6-5 overall and 5-3 in Big Sky play, WSU’s first winning season in five years. Hunsaker coached sophomore Emmett Tela to All-Big Sky honors for the second-straight season.
In his first season with the Wildcats, Hunsaker was the special teams coordinator and coached the secondary for the Wildcats. He coached Bo Bolen who earned All-Big Sky honors as a return specialist. He also coached Deon’tae Florence to All-Conference honors at cornerback.
Hunsaker came to Weber State after spending two seasons on the coaching staff at the University of Utah where he spent time as the academic coordinator as well as Associate Director of Player Personnel for the Utes.
It was his second stint on the coaching staff with the Utes. He was a graduate assistant coach at Utah from 2003-06 where he coached the outside linebackers and spent time working for coaches Urban Meyer, Kyle Whittingham and Gary Andersen. Jay Hill was an assistant coach with the Utes during Hunsaker’s tenure at Utah.
Hunsaker played four years of college football at Southern Utah from 1997-01 spending time as a running back and defensive end. As a senior in 2001, he played in all 11 games and started 10 for the Thunderbirds. While at SUU he did a coaching internship with the Dallas Cowboys working with Jack Reilly, the offensive coordinator.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in advertising from Southern Utah in 2001, and a master’s degree in sport psychology at Utah in 2006. He and his wife Ami have three children, Lauren, Clinton and Eva.
Hunsaker is the son of longtime college basketball coach Dick Hunsaker. The senior Hunsaker played three seasons of college basketball at Weber State from 1974-77 under head coach Neil McCarthy. He then spent ten seasons as an assistant coach with the Wildcats from 1977-87 before later coaching at Ball State, Utah and Utah Valley.
