Gene Visscher had the distinction of playing for the Weber State Wildcats, then returning to coach the ’Cats for six seasons as well.
Visscher, a 6-foot-6 center from Muskegon, Michigan, helped the Wildcat to great success from 1964 to 1966 under Coach Dick Motta. The rugged Visscher was named First Team All-Big Sky Conference in 1965 and 1966, and was a key member of two Big Sky championship teams. The Wildcats went 43-8 during his two years as a player.
During his career, Visscher became the 17th leading scorer in WSU history with 985 points, and was eighth all-time in rebounds with 640 boards. Visscher averaged 20.9 points and 14.3 rebounds per contest during his senior season.
Following his playing career, Visscher joined Coach Phil Johnson’s WSU staff for three seasons, as the Wildcats went 84-16 during that time, winning three Big Sky Conference titles.
Visscher took over as head basketball coach in 1971, and won back-to-back Big Sky championships and trips to the NCAA Tournament. As a head coach, Visscher went 63-45 during his time with the Wildcats, averaging more than 19 wins per season.
