Javier Chavez left his mark on the Weber State distance running record books, helping establish a tradition that continues to this day.

Chavez came to Weber State from a small village near Zacatecas, Mexico, and earned nine All-Big Sky Conference honors through the late 1970s. Chavez earned a pair of All-Big Sky honors in cross country. He was a four-time All-Big sky honoree in indoor track and field, while claiming three All-Big Sky honors in outdoor track and field.

Chavez – who was national champion in the 800 and 1,500 meters -- arrived in Ogden, Utah, in 1977. He won the indoor mile at the 1979 Big Sky Championships, helping the Wildcats win the team title. He won the 1,500 meters in the 1980 Big Sky Outdoor Championships. Chavez set the school record in the 1,500 meters in 1979, with a time of 3:45.2, now still on the WSU all-time list.

After his WSU career, Chavez and his wife Amada began a successful career as restaurateurs in the Ogden area. He has been a longtime running coach at St. Joseph Catholic High School, with several of his children and runners competing at Weber State.
