Mose Watkins claimed distinction at Weber, first as a standout junior college player on the gridiron, then after a distinguished stint in the military, he returned to star for the Wildcats’ early four-year college squad.
Watkins, from Henderson, Nevada, earned First Team All-ICAC honors in 1959 and 1960 as a defensive tackle. He then left for four years of military service in the United States Army. While with the Army, Watkins earned note as an amateur boxer, football player and paratrooper.
When Watkins returned, Weber State was a four-year NCAA school and Sark Arslanian was the coach. Under Arslanian, Watkins anchored the Weber State defensive line, helping the Wildcats achieve a 14-4 record in two seasons.
The 6-foot-2, 240-pound Watkins was named Second Team All-Big Sky Conference in 1966.
“Don’t mess with ol’ Mose,” penned on local sportswriter after watching him dominate the defensive line during his senior season.
Watkins passed away in 2008 in Syracuse, Utah.
