Nicky Wangsgard

A two-sport athlete who was a two-time Big Sky MVP and a two-time conference champion, Nicky Wangsgard was a standout for the Weber State women's tennis team and played on the women's basketball team from 1992-95.Â
An Ogden native and graduate of Ogden High School, Wangsgard first played two seasons of tennis at the University of Kentucky where she competed in the NCAA Tournament.Â
She transferred to Weber State to play two sports and immediately made an impact with the Wildcats. Â
She excelled in two seasons of tennis and was named the Big Sky Most Valuable Player in 1993 and 1994. In 1993, she won the Big Sky individual No. 1 singles title, the last year the No. 1 singles championship was contested.
As a senior in 1994, she repeated as conference Most Valuable Player. She is one of just two players ever to earn Big Sky MVP honors twice in a career.Â
In both seasons, she helped lead Weber State to the Big Sky Conference team title, under head coach Keith Cox. Â
While playing tennis, she also played three seasons of women's basketball under head coach Carla Taylor. She played in 72 career games over three seasons for the Wildcats and led the team in scoring during the 1993-94 season.Â
She also excelled in the classroom and earned Academic All-Conference honors in every season of competition.Â
She later became a professional cyclist and raced for 10 years, winning several state and national titles. She also raced in two World Cup races.Â
Wangsgard is now a professor in the College of Education and Human Development at Southern Utah University. She has been at SUU since 2006 and earned the rank of full professor last year. Â
