Wildcats Women Win Third Straight

Ogden, UT ? The Weber State women's basketball team won their third straight game with a 61-50 victory over Colorado State Saturday afternoon at the Dee Events Center. The win moves the Wildcats to 4-3 on the season.
The ?Cats used a strong defensive game and took care of the ball in route to Saturday's win. WSU entered the game averaging 18.8 turnovers per game, but committed a season-low of nine turnovers Saturday. They also held CSU to just 31 percent shooting from the field.
The Wildcats led 28-25 at halftime but the Rams tied the game at 32-32 with 16:51 to play. From there Weber State went on a 23-3 run over the next eight minutes and held a 20 point lead at 55-35 and cruised to the win. It is the first win by Weber State over a team from the Mountain West Conference since beating Utah in December 2004.
Senior Sara Tuomi led the Wildcats with 18 points and a team-high six rebounds. She also knocked down four three-pointers in the win. Another senior Tashina Taylor, scored 12 points on 4-5 shooting. Sophomore Ali Thorderson came off the bench and added ten points.
Weber State shot 37 percent from the field but held CSU to 31 percent shooting. The ?Cats also had a season-high of 16 assists on 20 field goals. WSU was 8-25 from three-point land and held the Rams to 3-11 shooting from beyond the arc. The ?Cats also forced 19 CSU turnovers and converted 24 points off of those turnovers.
“We created good shots and shared the ball very well,” said WSU head coach Carla Taylor. “We were able to take care of the ball and adjusted well to their defense. I'm proud of our effort on the defensive end and we had some players step up and play well.”
Weber State (4-3) will now host BYU next Wednesday at the Dee Events Center. That game will begin at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday as part of Field Trip Day for local elementary schools who will be attending the game.
