Las Vegas, NV -- The Weber State University spirit squad recently earned third place at the USA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Nationals at the Cashman Center in Las Vegas. The 34 member squad competed in the four-year college co-ed division. The Wildcats earned third place in the event for the third-straight year, having finished in the same position at the competition the last two years.
"We were in the toughest division of the competition and were up against some of the biggest schools in the nation," said WSU spirit squad advisor Summer Willis. "To come out with third place in our first three national competitions is really great for our program."
Eight teams emerge from the semifinals, held on the first day of competition, to compete in the competition's finals.
The Wildcats finished behind Long Beach State and the University of Oregon.
"We've done a really good job of getting some university recognition with this competition the last few years," said Willis. "Each time that we have competed, people have come up to us asking about Weber State. We have been raising some eyebrows with our performance and beginning to become a known competitor in this competition."
In addition to the team competition, Gavin McKenna and Lexi Coy placed 5th overall in the partner stunt division.
"We really appreciate all the support we have received to help us get to the competition," said Willis. "We did a lot of fund-raising and had some great sponsors. It's nice to be able to reward those who helped us by bringing back a trophy."
