CHENEY, Wash. -- Weber State got "Moore" than it asked for Thursday night. Eastern Washington University center BRANDON MOORE posted a double/double with 21 points and 10 rebounds leading the Eagles to a 69-57 win over the Wildcats.
The loss dropped WSU to 12-11 overall and 7-4 in league play, two games behind league leader Portland State and one game in the loss column ahead of Idaho State, Montana, Montana State and Northern Arizona.
The Wildcats got out of chutes quickly going on a 6-0 run to begin the game and led 18-14 with 8:26 left in the first half on a three-pointer by JAMAINE NANCE and a chance to extend the lead to six or seven following an Eagle turnover.
But the three-point flood gates opened wide for the Eagles ignited by a long three from TREY GROSS at the 7:28 mark and ending with a three by MILAN STANOJEVIC with four seconds left capping a 19-3 scoring run and putting EWU up 33-21 at half time.
The Eagles hit 7-15 from long range in the first half and just 3-11 (.273) in the second but two them were back-to-back daggers by MARCUS HINTON and ADRIS DeLEON which came after the Wildcats had battled back to within eight at 52-44 with 8:22 left. Those shots put the Eagles up by fourteen (58-44) and they never looked back nor were ever seriously challenged.
BRANDON MOORE led EWU's second half charge with 12 points and six rebounds. MARCUS HINTON had 12 points while TREY GROSS and ADRIS DeLEON each chipped in with 111.
The Wildcats were led by DAVIIN DAVIS who score 16 points on 6-9 shooting from the field and 4-4 from the line. DAVIS had a career high 23 points vs. EWU in the first meeting of the season in Ogden. DEZMON HARRIS scored all 13 of his points in the second half. KELLEN McCOY added 11. ARTURAS VALEIKA was held scoreless for just the second time in his 56 game career going 0-5 from the field but did lead the Wildcats in rebounding with nine.
The win kept Eastern Washington's tournament hopes alive. They move to 10-17 overall and 5-8 in Big Sky play.
Weber State now moves on to league-leader Portland State on Saturday, February 16. The Wildcats will have the next shot to stop PSU's seven-game winning streak. The Vikings haven't loss since dropping a 68-73 game AT WEBER STATE on January 10.
