Wildcats Down Aggies 5-2 in Logan

LOGAN, Utah -- The Weber State women's tennis team improved to 2-6 on the season Thursday with a 5-2 win over in-state rival Utah State.
The Wildcats continued their recent strong play in doubles, sweeping the Aggies to grab the first point of the contest. Ashley Schapper and Inalise Pienaar defeated Bridgette Strickland and Brianna Harris 8-6 at No. 1, while Gabriela Venditto and Keya Adamson put away Hailey Swenson and Britney Watts 8-2 at No. 2. Kelli Lindley and Greyce Farias downed Jennifer Johnson and Taylor Perry 8-6 at No. 3 to complete the doubles sweep. The three wins moves the Wildcats doubles record to 9-3 over their last four outings. Two of the three losses in that stretch have come in tiebreakers.
"The key for us right now is how well we have been playing in doubles," said WSU head coach Jonas Ehrlin. "Opening matches this well has really set the tone for us going into singles play, and it's always nice to earn that opening point."
In singles play, the Wildcats won in straight-sets at the No. 1, 3 and 5 spots to earn the necessary point total for the match win. Venditto downed Harris 6-2, 6-2 in the top spot, while Schapper won 6-3, 6-1 over Strickland at No. 3. Red-shirt freshman Alyssia Pyne, playing in her first collegiate match, put away Johnson 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 6 spot. The 'Cats also got a three-set win out of Adamson at No. 5, as she got past Perry 5-7, 6-4, 10-8.
"This was a big win for us after dropping a close match (to Utah State) in Ogden earlier this month," said Ehrlin. "We've been playing really well lately, but have dropped some very tight matches. It was nice to see us come out today and finish this one off."
