Wildcats Women Win Third Straight

The Weber State women's basketball team closed out Thursday night's game at Northern Colorado on a 22-4 run to seal a 60-50 win over the Bears in Greeley, Colorado.  The win is the third of the season in Big Sky play for the Wildcats, who snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 9-12 overall and 3-6 in conference play. 

 

Northern Colorado held an eight point lead over Weber State at 46-38 with 8:41 remaining.  But from there on the Wildcats took over and finished on the 22-4 run.  The ?Cats held UNC to just one field goal and just 1-6 shooting during that run.  WSU was 7-15 from the field over the same stretch.  They were also a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line, with all eight coming from senior Sara Tuomi.    

 

Tuomi led the ?Cats for the 12th time this season as she finished with 24 points, with 14 of those points coming in the final 7:00 of the game.  She was 8-16 from the field and 8-8 from the free throw line.  She has now made 31 straight free throws and has scored in double figures in all 21 games this season.

 

Sophomore Tonya Schnibbe finished with 13 points and a game-high seven assists and three steals.  Tashina Taylor added seven points off the bench.  

 

The Wildcats shot 37 percent from the field and held UNC to 32 percent shooting.  WSU was also 16-18 from the free throw line.  They did finish 0-7 from three-point land, ending a streak of 23straight games with a made three-pointer. 

 

Northern Colorado had 26 turnovers in the game, the most by a WSU opponent this season, and the ?Cats finished with 20 points off of turnovers.  The Wildcats had just 12 turnover and improved to 9-1 this season when the have fewer turnovers that their opponents. 

 

All three Weber State wins in conference play have come on the road as the ?Cats are now 3-2 in road games and 0-4 at home. 

 

Thursday's game was the only game of the week for the Wildcats who will return home next week to host Eastern Washington Thursday and Portland State on Saturday.
