Ogden, UT – Four Wildcats posted double digits in kills as the Weber State volleyball team beat Idaho State 3-1 Wednesday night at the Swenson Gym. The Wildcats picked up a thrilling 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 26-24 victory to close out the first half of the Big Sky season at 3-5.
Chelsea Bair led the 'Cats once again, finishing with her fifth straight double-double adding 16 kills and tying her season-high with a team-high 16 digs. Bair has posted a double-double in all four on Weber State's wins this season.
Senior Caitlyn Anderson added a season-high 16 kills for the Wildcats and also hit .324 and added eight digs. Amy Fackrell added 11 kills and hit .474 and Jenna Leggat had 10 kills, seven digs, and five blocks for the Wildcats.
It marked the first time all season that WSU has had four players in double digits in kills.
“This was definitely a team effort,” said WSU head coach Al Givens. “We played really smart and hung in really well after dropping the first set. We got a lot of contribution from different players and that is what we need to do. Now we just have to build off this.”
The Wildcats led 21-19 in the first set but the Bengals finished the set on a 6-1 run to take a 1-0 lead. The second set had 10 ties and four lead changes. WSU finished off the set on a 4-1 run, including the last three points to even the match at 1-1.
They led 16-9 midway through the third set before Idaho State scored six straight points to make it a close set. But the 'Cats were able to maintain the lead and win the set.
Idaho State didn't give up and jumped out to a 12-8 lead in the fourth set. That set included 14 ties and five lead changes. WSU scored the last two points on a kill from Leggat and a block by Anderson and Emily Jones.
The 3-1 win was the first time WSU has won a match in less than five sets. It was also the first time all season they had won three straight sets.
As a team Weber State had a season-high 65 kills on the night, compared to 54 for Idaho State. They hit .268 on the night, the second best hitting percentage of the season. WSU also added a season-high 62 assists and finished with 11 blocks.
With the win the 'Cats snap a three-match losing streak and improve to 4-15 overall and 3-5 in Big Sky action. WSU will step out of conference action Saturday and host Seattle at 7:00 p.m. They will return to conference play next weekend at Portland State and Eastern Washington.
