OGDEN, Utah -- Tim Toone caught three touchdown passes and recorded the longest punt return for a touchdown in the history of the Big Sky Conference to lead Weber State to a 49-10 homecoming win over Sacramento State on Saturday at Stewart Stadium.
Cameron Higgins found Toone on scoring strikes of 25, five and eight yards, with the first coming with 8:27 left in the opening quarter to give the 'Cats a 7-0 lead. Toone's first reception also put him over 3,000 receiving yards for his career, making him the first Wildcat, and the seventh player in Big Sky history to reach that milestone.
Weber State went up 21-0 with 8:08 left in the second when Toone took a punt from the Wildcat five and split the coverage up the middle and then cutting to the left sideline. 95 yards later, Toone was in the end zone with his second-career score on a punt return.
A 12-yard pass from Jason Smith to Brian Heath put the Hornets on the board with two minutes left in the half, but the Wildcats responded with a pair of scores to lead 35-7 at the break.
With 45 seconds left in the half, Higgins found Mike Phillips on a 30-yard toss to cap off a six-play, 50-yard scoring drive to make the score 28-7. On the second play from scrimmage on the ensuing drive, WSU's Jordan Brown intercepted Smith's pass attempt, and returned the ball 31 yards to the Sacramento State 24-yardline. From there, Higgins needed only two plays and 15 seconds to get the 'Cats in the end zone again, finding Toone for his second scoring reception of the day.
Toone's final score came with 4:18 to play in the third quarter. Bo Bolen capped off the scoring for the Wildcats on an 11-yard run with 10:39 left in the game.
Higgins finished the day completing 23 of 30 passes for 290 yards and five touchdowns. Toone led the Wildcat receiving corps with eight catches for 154 yards and his three scores. Joe Collins grabbed six balls for 36 yards, including a three-yard catch for a touchdown in the second quarter.
Brown added to his interception with a game-high nine tackles for Weber State. Taylor Sedillo added seven tackles and a forced fumble to help lead the defensive effort.
