The Weber State volleyball team was swept 3-0 at Idaho State Saturday night in the final road match of the season. The Bengals won the match 25-12, 26-24, 25-21, dropping Weber State to 7-20 overall and 5-10 in Big Sky play. The Wildcats have just two matches remaining in the season and have officially been eliminated from the Big Sky postseason tournament.
The Bengals never trailed in the first set and jumped out to a quick 14-5 lead and never looked back. ISU hit .600 for the set with 16 kills and just one error.
The Wildcats rebounded in the second set but could not close it out, a season-long problem. There were ten ties and five lead changes in the set. The 'Cats trailed 21-20 but went on a 4-1 run to take a 24-22 lead and have two set points. But, as has been a problem all season, the 'Cats weren't able to close out the set as the Bengals scored four straight points to win 26-24. The last three points were all errors by Weber State.
The third set was tied at 20 when Idaho State went on a 5-1 run to close out the match with a win. It was the first time the 'Cats have been swept by Idaho State since October 2005. Weber State has now been swept 12 times this season.
ISU out hit the Wildcats .327 to .214 but Weber State was close or better in most other statistical categories. The Wildcats did have seven service errors and 16 attack errors.
Senior Jenna Leggat led the Wildcats for the second straight match, finishing with 12 kills on the night. Chelsea Bair added 11 kills and seven digs and Caitlyn Anderson added 16 digs.
Idaho State improves to 6-8 in Big Sky play and is still alive for the fourth and final spot in the conference tournament.
This marks the first time since 2004 that Weber State will not participate in the Big Sky Tournament.
The Wildcats will finish out the 2009 season next weekend when they host Montana Friday and Montana State Saturday at the Swenson Gym.
