Wildcats Drop A 66-57 Road Tilt At UC Santa Barbara

UC Santa Barbara was in a zone, unfortunately, the Wildcats weren't and it resulted in a 66-57 loss for Coach Randy Rahe's Wildcats Tuesday night in Santa Barbara, California.
The Gauchos played close attention to the scouting report and game film of last Friday's WSU game with Utah State where the Wildcats were a paltry 2-20 from the three-point line.
With that in mind, the Gauchos employed various zone defenses which completely shut out the Wildcat's inside scoring game. As a result, the Wildcats put up 38 three pointers, but connected on just seven in the nine-point loss.
“They did a great job of denying our passes to the inside,” said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. “Last year at our place Steve Panos really hurt them inside and they decided to see if we could beat them from the perimeter and we weren't able to find the basket, especially in the first half.”
UCSB jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead, seven of them coming from forward Orlando Johnson who had a game high 19 points and was the only Gaucho in double figures.
The Wildcats battled back going on a 20-16 scoring run in the final 14 minutes to make it a 30-20 game at half time.  Damian Lillard, who scored 20 points last Friday vs. Utah State, was just 1-10 from the field in the first half, 0-9 from the three-point line.
“I told him at half time not to worry. We were playing some good defense, we were hustling and that his shots would fall.” said Rahe.
Fall they did in the second half as Lillard hit 4-7 from beyond the arc. The Wildcats went on a 21-13 scoring run in the second half, pulling to within two at 43-41 with 9:35 remaining on a three-pointer by Lillard. But the Wildcats would come no closer as the Gauchos went on a 9-1 scoring spree over the next four minutes to take a 52-42 lead with 5:28 left and they never got closer than six the rest of the way.
The Wildcats held the Gauchos to just 8-25 shooting (.320) in the second half but UCSB hit 19-26 free throws while the Wildcats were 8-10.
Lillard's 16 and 12 from Kyle Bullinger were WSU's only two double figure scorers. Franklin Session had 10 rebounds, four on the offensive glass.  UCSB's Orlando Johnson led all scorers with 19 and was the Gauchos' only double figure scorer. He added 10 rebounds and two assists. Jon Pastorek had 11 boards.
Weber State drops to 0-2 while UCSB moves to 2-0.  The Wildcats are in action next Sunday, November 22 with a 3:00 (MST) tip off on the road at Seattle University in Key Arena.  WSU's next home game is on Tuesday, November 24 at 7:05 p.m. against Western State College.
