Wildcats Host Instate Rival Utah State In Season Opener

Weber State Rally Falls Short In A 91-87 Loss At Seattle University

11/23/2009 2:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball

Sunday afternoon inside Key Arena in Seattle, Washington, “Charles” was certainly in charge.  Charles Garcia, a 6-10, 230 junior center scored 27 points, 20 in the first half, and grabbed 11 rebounds leading the Redhawks to a 91-87 win over Weber State on a cold, rainy outside in the Emerald City.
Garcia was one of four Redhawk starters who scored in double figures. Seattle U. shot nearly 55 percent from the field hitting 35-64 shots. Their pressing defense forced 20 Wildcat turnovers which turned into 27 points for the home team.
“This was a great game for our kids to play in and we will learn a lot from what happened today,” said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. “I was pleased with our effort and hustle and I told them after if you play hard and leave it all out there and lose, then we don't have any excuses and that's what we did today.”
The Wildcats jumped out to a 28-20 lead on a lay up by Lindsey Hughey at the 10:32 mark of the first half. But the Redhawks rallied back with a 14-2 scoring run over the next three and half minutes with Garcia scoring seven of those 14 points. Seattle U then put together an 8-1 scoring run to end the half and take a 48-41 lead into the locker room. There were seven first half lead changes. Kyle Bullinger and Lindsey Hughey each had 10 to match Garcia's 20.
The Redhawks came smoking and built an 84-66 lead with 6:43 left and it looked as though they would run away with the game. But the Wildcats dug down and put together a nifty 21-7 scoring run which began with a lay up by Steve Panos with 6:05 remaining, and four straight free throws by Damian Lillard to make it an 84-72 game at the 5:25 mark.
Bullinger hit two three pointers in the final 2:20 of the game, with a hoop by Panos in between and suddenly with 28 seconds left Seattle's lead is down to three at 90-87. Garcia was fouled by Hughes with 18 seconds left and he made one of two.
Panos then turned it over on a steal by Garret Lever, who then turned it over himself giving WSU the ball with eight seconds left. Damian Lillard missed a three-pointer and Nick Hansen rebounded but the Wildcats could not get off another shot in time.
Kyle Bullinger's 22 points tied his career single game best, as did the 21 points by Steve Panos. Those two combined to make 15-25 shots from the field and they accounted for 11 rebounds. Damian Lillard had 18 points hitting 6-6 from the free throw line but was just 5-14 overall (2-8 from the three-point line) from the field.  Hughey came off the bench and had his best game in a Wildcat uniform with 12 points on 6-8 shooting and had five assists and four steals.
Seattle University moves its record to 2-2. The Redhawks, who are in their first season playing an NCAA Division I schedule after making the transition from Division III, defeated Fresno State, 85-84, on Tuesday night and will play at the University of Utah this coming Tuesday.
Weber State is now 0-3 for the season but are only 20 points away from being 3-0. The Wildcats return home to host Western State College from Gunnison, Colorado this coming Tuesday, November 24 at 7:05 in the Dee Events Center.  The Wildcats then play at Brigham Young University on Friday, November 27 at 7:35 p.m. inside the Marriott Center in Provo, Utah.
