Game  #11
C A L  P O L Y   vs. WEBER STATE UNIVERSITY
Saturday, November 21, 2009  *  12:05 p.m. (MST)
Stewart  Stadium  *  Ogden, Utah

THE BOTTOM LINE ON TOP

*The Wildcats need a win on Saturday to maintain hope for an at-large bid to the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs.  ... If Montana State happens to upset #1 ranked Montana at home, the Bobcats would most likely go regardless of what Weber State and Eastern Washington do on Saturday.

*A win Saturday for the Wildcats would give them a 7-4 record overall and a 17-8 record over the past two seasons.

*Last Saturday's win over Northern Arizona was Weber State's 250TH victory overall as a four-year institution.

*WSU's TREVYN SMITH needs 100 rushing yards to give him 5,000 for his career, and 128 rushing yards to give him 1,000 for the season.

*Tim Toone needs 11 receptions to give him 200 for his career.

*A win Saturday would be the 120th of Coach McBride's coaching career spanning 18 seasons.

Walsh had been the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the United States Military Academy (Army) for the past two seasons.  ... He replaced Rich Ellerson who named head coach at Army last Winter.  ... This is Walsh's 19th season as a head coach. He is 121-88 overall.  ... SERIES HISTORY
Weber State holds a 4-3 advantage in the series and are 2-1 vs. the Mustangs when playing in Ogden.   ...  Last year the two teams met in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Division I FCS playoffs in San Luis Obispo where the Wildcats knocked off the #3 ranks Mustangs 49-35.
    1995    OGDEN                            53-43    W       2006    Ogden    0-17    L
    1996    SAN LUIS OBISPO    30-20    W       2007    San Luis Obispo    19-47    L

    2002    San Luis Obispo                26-28    L

In 2001, Weber State and Cal Poly played in a FOUR OVERTIME game in Ogden. It is  still the only 4 OT game in WSU football history.  ... WSU running back Johnnie Gray threw a half back pass to wide receiver Damon Greenberry in the 4th OT for the victory. ... The only reason the game went into overtime was because on the last play of the game, Cal Poly quarterback Chris Peterson threw a “Hail Mary” pass from  his own 14-yard line and it was caught by Adam Herzing who escape two tackles and dashed to the end zone for an 86-yard touchdown pass, tying the game at 31-31. ... Both teams kicked field goals in the first two OT periods. ... In the 3rd, WSU got the ball first and Tate Bennett threw a pass which was intercepted by Gabe Del Porto in  the end zone. Cal Poly got the ball at the 25-yard line needing only a field goal to win, but on the first play Raj Thompson fumble and WSU's Spencer Sigoda recovered.

LAST YEAR AT CAL POLY - Nov. 29, 2008
Weber State, the automatic qualifier from the Big Sky Conference, was sent on the road to face #3 Cal Poly matching up two of the most potent offenses in Division I FCS. The two teams didn't disappoint, combining for 84 points and 1,112 yards as the Wildcats prevailed 49-35.    ...   CAMERON HIGGINS was nearly flawless completing 21-33-0 passes for 399 yards and two touchdowns, 10 of them to TIM TOONE for 199 yards and one TD. .. TREVYN SMITH carried 23 times for 137 yards and two touchdowns, and caught a 37-yard touchdown pass as well.  ...    WSU  had 156 rushing yards and 406 passing yards while Cal Poly had 363 rushing yards and 185 passing yards.  ... CP quarterback JONATHAN DALLY was 11-30 passing but suffered four interceptions after throwing just two the entire regular season. He also had 23 carries for 177 yard and two touchdowns.  ... Cal Poly made it a 42-35 game with 3:08 left on a five-yard pass from DALLY to RAMSES BARDEN.  The on sides kick went out at the CP 46 and three plays later WSU reserve running back JUSTIN WHITE scampered 21 yards giving WSU a 49-35 lead. ... Following a 58-yard kickoff return by RYAN MOLE, the Mustangs got the ball at the WSU 31 and drove to the Wildcats 3-yard line. But on first-and-goal, DALLY's pass was intercepted in the end zone by SCOTTY GOODLOE and WSU ran out the clock. It was GOODLOE'S second interception of the game.

LAST TIME IN OGDEN, UTAH -  Sept. 9, 2006
A solid defensive effort by the Wildcats went for naught as Cal Poly took advantage of two crucial turnovers and turned them into touchdowns as the 5th ranked Mustangs rolled to a 17-0 win in WSU's 2006 home opener.  ... CP got a gift early in the game when WSU quarterback Ian Pizarro attempted a screen pass which was thrown behind the intended receiver, Marky Filipe. The officials ruled it a lateral and CP's Ryan Shotwell recovered at the one-yard line. James Noble scored on the first play to make it a 7-0 game.  .. That would be the only offensive touchdown of the game for either side.  ... The Mustangs got a 28-yard field goal from Nick Coromelas with 21 seconds left in the 3rd quarter and a 42-yard interceptions return by Mark Restelli with 2:22 left in the game.  ... WSU's defense held Cal Poly to just 239 total offense yards but the Mustang defense held the Wildcats to just 150 total yards.  ...  James Noble had 27 carries for 110 yards and red-shirt freshman running back TREVYN SMITH had 15 carries for 81 yards coming off the bench for the Wildcats.

SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS

They opened up the year with a 38-19 win at home over Sacramento State and lost 35-23 at Montana on Oct. 10.  ... The Mustangs are coming off a wild 50-48 loss at home to South Dakota. They trailed 50-28 and scored three straight touchdowns, the last one coming with 20 seconds left in the game. They went for two but the pass failed. ... Cal Poly then recovered the on sides kick, but Tony Smith threw four incomplete passes to end the game.   ...  The Mustangs do have a big win over South Dakota State (21-14) back on Oct. 3 at home. PLAYOFF SELECTION SHOW

COACH RON McBRIDE QUOTES

ON CAL POLY:  “They have a little different team than the one we played last season. They still run the spread with four receivers but they don't rely on their quarterback to run as much as they did last season.  I like Johnson, their wide receiver. He has great size, speed and a pair of great hands.”

ON THE WILDCATS:   “We have to take care of business on our end Saturday and not worry about what anyone else is doing. We finished second the Big Sky. That has usually meant a playoff berth, so we've done what we can. Obviously if Montana State can pull the upset over Montana, then they deserve to go, but I really feel we deserve a chance if we win.”
