Wildcats Swept in Big Sky Opener

The Weber State volleyball team opened Big Sky Conference action on a sour note with a 3-0 loss at Northern Colorado Thursday night in Greeley. The Bears beat the 'Cats 25-17, 25-22, 25-12, handing Weber State its eighth-straight loss as the 'Cats drop to 1-10 on the season.
It was the seventh time in 11 matches that the Wildcats have been swept 3-0. WSU has also lost the first set in all 11 matches this season.
With the set tied at six early on, the Bears went on a 6-2 run and never looked back. They closed the set on a 7-2 run.
The Wildcats had several chances to win the second set, which included eight ties and five lead changes. WSU led 20-19 when the Bears rattled off four straight points.
Northern Colorado dominated the third set, jumping out to an 8-4 lead and closing the set on a 16-6 run. The Bears hit .259 for the set, while the Wildcats hit -.120 with three kills and six errors.
The Wildcats had a season-low 23 kills in the match, while Northern Colorado recorded 44 kills. The Bears out hit the Wildcats .241 to .082 and had 18 more digs. They also recorded six aces, while WSU had seven service aces.
Weber State was led by Jenna Leggat who posted six kills for the 'Cats. Leggat also added four blocks and three digs. Chelsea Bair had just five kills, the second fewest in a match in her career. Caitlyn Anderson led WSU with 11 digs and three kills.
The Wildcats had won three straight matches in Greeley before Thursday's loss. Northern Colorado improved to 7-5 with the win, the best overall record in the Big Sky.
“We had some opportunities tonight, particularly in the second set but just made a couple mistakes in the end,” said WSU head coach Al Givens. “We were outplayed defensively and have some work to do. Now we have to regroup and get ready for Saturday.”
Weber State will continue Big Sky action this Saturday when they travel to Flagstaff, Arizona to take on Northern Arizona at 8:00 p.m. Mountain time.
