Wildcats fall to BYU, 3-0

Sophomore left side hitter Bethany Wray had 12 kills to lead the Wildcats on Tuesday night, but Weber State still came up short against in-state rival Brigham Young University, falling 3-0 (25-22, 25-14, 25-16) to the Cougars at Swenson Gym.
Sophomore setter Caitlin Penrod, making her third consecutive start in place of injured senior Kim Lissinna, had a career night with seven kills on 10 attacks, finishing with a .600 attack percentage. All were career highs for the South Ogden, Utah-native, who also tied her career high with seven digs and had 24 assists.
Weber State hit a respectable .228 on 92 total attacks in the match, but struggled to block against the height-blessed Cougars, recording a season-low one block.
BYU hit a blistering .449, recording 46 kills with just six errors on 89 attempts. The Cougars were led by Stephanie Snow's 12 kills and .800 attack percentage.
The Wildcats started slowly, falling down 8-1 in the first set, but rallied to tie things up at 19-19. BYU slowly edged away to claim the set and a 1-0 lead in the match. The Cougars controlled the second set, hitting .600 with 16 kills on 25 attempts to take the 11-point win.
Weber State played strongly with BYU early in the third set, but a 5-1 scoring burst put the Cougars ahead 9-3 at the Wildcats couldn't rally.
Weber State, which dropped to 2-18 with the loss, will head to Pocatello, Idaho this weekend to face Idaho State at 7 p.m. on Saturday night in Reed Gym.
