OGDEN, Utah -- Despite a quality chance early, the Wildcats came up short in their bid for two in a row.
Sophomore left side hitter Bethany Wray tallied 13 kills and sophomore middle blocker Carissa Noble added 10 kills for the Weber State University women's volleyball team on Saturday night, but the Wildcats fell in straight sets to defending regular season champion Portland State.
Riding the arm of outside hitter Whitney Phillips, ranked No. 6 in the NCAA in kills per set, Portland State defeated Weber State 3-0 (28-26, 25-15, 25-14) at Swenson Gym.
Weber State led 20-14 in the first set and held set point at 24-22, but couldn't close it out as Portland State rallied to take the 28-26 victory.
The Vikings jumped out to large leads early in both the second and third sets, en route to the victory.
Weber State returns to action on Thursday at Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz.
