Weber State falls 3-0 to Utah Valley

Taking a quick mid-week trip south, the Weber State University women's volleyball team took on in-state rival Utah Valley on Tuesday night, but came up short in a 3-0 loss (25-14, 25-21, 25-15) to the Wolverines at the Shurian Family Activity Center.
Sophomore left side hitter Bethany Wray led Weber State with eight kills, while sophomore hitter Emily Jones had seven and redshirt-freshman middle blocker Elli Graff had seven kills for the Wildcats.
Utah Valley took control of the match in the first set, hitting .393 with 13 kills. The Wildcats struggled to get into system in the set and had just eight kills in scoring 14 points.
The second set was much tighter, featuring 14 lead ties and seven lead changes. Wray and Graff each had five kills in the second set as the Wildcats staked out a 17-16 lead. The Wolverines, however, countered with a 6-0 burst to take a 22-17 advantage and traded points with the Wildcats the rest of the way. Weber State hit .262 in the second set with 15 kills.
The Wildcats started out hot in the third set, staking out a 4-1 lead, but the Wolverines rallied with a 7-2 burst to take an 8-6 lead. Utah Valley gradually pulled away to complete the sweep.
Senior setter Kim Lissinna was held out of the match as a precautionary measure after tweaking her knee in the fourth set against Montana on Saturday night, giving sophomore setter Caitlin Penrod a chance to get some playing time.
Weber State returns to Big Sky Conference action on Saturday night when the Wildcats take on Sacramento State at Colberg Court in Sacramento, Calif. First serve against the Hornets is set for 8 p.m.
