The home crowd never had a chance. Weber State placed four players in double figure scoring, shot 59 percent from the field, and led start to finish in its 86-54 win over host Alaska-Anchorage in the opening round of the 33rd Annual Carrs / Safeway Great Alaska Shootout.
With All-America candidate, Damian Lillard, struggling for the first time this season, senior guard Lindsey Hughey (6-3, 205) and reserve forward Byron Fulton (6-7, 220 RsFr.) each scored 14 points to pick up the Lillard's deficit. Hughey hit 5-6 from the field and grabbed a game high eight rebounds to lead the Wildcats. Fulton came off the bench to score a career high 14 points, hitting 7-10 from the field.
“We played with a great deal of intensity and with purpose tonight,” said Rahe. “We picked up a lot of early fouls in both halves but the reserve five came in and gave us a real lift, especially in the second half when it looked like they were ready to make a run.”
The Wildcats led 37-23 at half time with Hughey scoring seven and getting six each from Darin Mahoney, Damian Lillard and Byron Fulton. The Seawolves made a small run in the first five minutes, pulling to within nine at 48-39 on a three-pointer from Mario Gill.
The 'Cats then put together an 8-1 run over the next three minutes to take a 56-40 lead at the 11:26 mark, then broke the game wide open on back to back three-pointers from freshman guard Jordan Richardson to take a 65-41 lead at the 9:09 mark to put the game out of reach.
“Damian's been really playing at a high level. Tonight he made sure to get everyone involved and they fed of his unselfishness and everyone really did a great job of sharing the ball, especially in that second half.” said Rahe.
Kyle Bullinger, who struggled in WSU's first three games, scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Lillard, who had been averaging 27 points per game, scored 11, but had five of WSU's 24 team assists.
The Wildcats hit 35-59 (.539) from the field and 9-20 (.450) from the three-point line. They only shot 11 free throws, making seven. The Wildcats were whistled for 25 personal fouls to just 13 for the Seawolves, but UAA made just 9-24 from the stripe.
The Wildcats (2-2) now face Arizona State in one semifinal game on Friday, November 26 at 8:00 p.m. (AST - 10:00 p.m. MST). The Sun Devils defeated Houston Baptist, 73-55 in the other Thursday opening round game. Drake faces St. John's (NY) in tomorrows other semifinal.
