Wildcats Hold Off Southern Utah, 77-71 Saturday Night in Cedar City

Damian Lillard scored a game high 22 points, including a big three pointer with 5:55 remaining, lifting the Wildcats to a 77-71 instate victory, on the road, against Southern Utah University. With the Wildcats clinging to a 61-55 lead, Lillard hit a pull up jumper from 27 feet, giving the 'Cats an eight point lead, and kept the Thunderbirds at bay for the rest of the contest.
The Wildcats got a big break with 2:56 left, leading 66-60, when SUU head coach, Roger Reid, was hit with a technical foul. Lillard made both free throws which was followed by a lay up from Lindsey Hughey,putting the 'Cats up by 10 (70-60).
Weber State received a career night from junior forward Darin Mahoney who scored a career high 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds. It was the first time in his 60+ game career that he has posted a double figure scoring game. His previous best was nine points.
The Wildcats had an uncharacteristic 17 turnovers, but made up for them by out rebounding the T-Birds, 35-25. Weber State moves to 5-3 overall this season and now has a three-game win streak intact. Southern Utah drops to 2-7. Next action for the Wildcats comes next Thursday, December 16 at the University of Tulsa.
