OGDEN, Utah - It took a gritty defensive effort, but the Wildcats are now 2-0 at home.
Senior quarterback Cameron Higgins hit senior wide receiver Joe Collins with a 60-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter that gave Weber State a critical two-possession lead, and the Wildcats defense carried them home for a 20-9 victory on Saturday night at Stewart Stadium.
The story of the night, however, wasn't the offense. It was grittiness of the Wildcats' defense.
Weber State held UC Davis to 298 yards and didn't allow the Aggies to get into the end zone all night. UC Davis finished with three field goals despite holding possession for nearly seven minutes longer than the Wildcats.
Senior safety Jordan Brown finished the night with 10 tackles, including seven solo. Senior middle linebacker Taylor Sedillo had nine assisted tackles. The Wildcats had two sacks and four tackles for loss, including an 11-yard sack from sophomore tackle Alofaio Levale.
Weber State (2-2 overall) scored first, taking a 3-0 lead on Shaun McClain's 22-yard field goal at the 8:04 mark.
UC Davis' Sean Kelley hit two second-quarter field goals, including one with 28 seconds to go in the first half to put the Aggies (1-3) ahead 6-3 at halftime.
The Wildcats came out firing in the second half, driving rapidly to the 10-yard line, but Higgins threw his only interception of the night. After holding the Aggies to just 17 yards on the next, Weber State drove 92 yards and Mike Hoke ran the ball in from the 2-yard line to put the Wildcats back out in front.
Kelley hit a fourth quarter field goal to trim the lead to 10-9 with 13:19 left in the game, but McClain converted on the Wildcats next drive to make it 13-9.
Weber State held UC Davis to 3-and-out on the next drive and Higgins blew the game open with the 60-yard TD pass to Collins.
Higgins finished the game 19-of-33 for 248 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore running back Bo Bolen rushed for 88 yards on 17 carries. Bolen finished with 157 all-purpose yards. Freshman Josh Booker rushed six times for 54 yards.
Weber State will play its second straight home game next Saturday when the Wildcats host Eastern Washington. Kickoff is set for 1:35 p.m. at Stewart Stadium.
