OGDEN, Utah – The Wildcats were tired of close. On Thursday night, they finally broke through. Fueled by a pair of double-doubles from junior center Mikell Woodfield and senior forward Caitlin Anderson, the Weber State University women's basketball captured its first Big Sky Conference victory of the season, knocking off Portland State 65-62 at the Dee Events Center. Anderson had 23 points and a season-high 14 rebounds for Weber State, moving her within 12 points of passing Chelsey Warburton for No. 14 on the Wildcats' all-time scorer charts. |
The double-double was the 15th of Anderson's career.
Woodfield, whose previous career-high in rebounds was eight, finished with 16 rebounds – including 11 in a monster first half. She also added 11 points for her first career double-double.
Sophomore guard Megan Patterson continued her sizzling outside shooting, knocking down four 3-pointers on eight attempts, to finish with 14 points.
Freshman point guard Justine Johnson also had a career day, dishing off a career-high seven assists along with seven points.
Weber State finished with a commanding 49-31 rebounding advantage, which included 21 on the offensive end. The Wildcats also outscored the Vikings 38-24 in paint.
The game was tight from start to finish, with neither team leading by more than six in a contest that featured seven ties and 14 lead changes.
Patterson hit her fourth 3-pointer of the night with 2:43 remaining to set off the wild final minutes.
Portland State regained the 62-61 lead with 1:30 left on a layup from Kelli Valentine.
Johnson hit both ends of a 1-and-1 with 18 seconds left to put Weber State back ahead 63-62, with the Vikings' Eryn Jones missing her attempt with 11 seconds to go and Woodfield pulled down the rebound and was fouled. She converted both to make it a 65-62 lead and then blocked Jones' 3-point attempt with three seconds left on the other end and PSU couldn't get off another shot before the buzzer.
The first half, which featured nine lead changes and two ties, ended with Portland State leading 31-27.
Weber State improved to 1-3 in Big Sky play (5-11 overall) with the victory, and will host Northern Colorado on Saturday at 2 p.m. to wrap up its current five-game home stand.
