OGDEN, Utah – The Weber State University women's basketball team did nearly everything it needed to do in its Big Sky Conference opener on Saturday afternoon.
Everything except hold on to the basketball.
The Wildcats committed 20 turnovers leading to 26 Northern Arizona points and sabotaging a solid all-around effort as the Lumberjacks nipped WSU 69-62 in Big Sky Conference action at the Dee Events Center.
Sophomore guard Megan Patterson led Weber State with 15 points, splashing in three 3-pointers and three assists. Senior forward Caitlin Anderson just missed a double-double, finishing with 13 points and nine rebounds for the Wildcats.
Sophomore forward Mariah Metoyer and junior center Mikell Woodfield each had seven points and seven rebounds, while freshman point guard Justine Johnson added six points and again tied her career high with six assists.
Weber State led 45-38 with 10:55 remaining in the game, but couldn't slow down Northern Arizona over the next few minutes as the Lumberjacks used a 21-4 scoring surge to take a 10-point advantage, a punch the Wildcats would never recover from.
The Wildcats (0-1 Big Sky, 4-9 overall) will have a week off to prepare to host Montana on Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. in the Dee Events Center.
